Eating Our Way Through London: Part 1

Weekend one is complete — and it was yummy.

I do think Chris and I are confounding the waitstaff with our under-ordering. We're trying to last the entire trip without getting sick of food, growing out of the jeans we packed or wasting money on food we can't finish. Plus, we want to try as many different things as we can.

Our plan: Have a little bit of a lot of different things rather than a lot of just a few things.

So far it's working.

Some of the highlights and recommendations:

Koshari Street — Egyptian Street Food

Anyone looking for an investment? Bring this to a food truck in the states, and I guarantee you will make a killing. The star of this simple menu is the Koshari bowl: lentils, rice and vermicelli topped with a spicy tomato sauce (they have three spice levels), chickpeas and caramelised onions. Healthy, delicious, super cheap and just down the street, this will be a regular lunch spot for us.

Snowflake Luxury Gelato

We laughed at the idea of "luxury gelato," but it was delicious.

Borough Market

Chris calls this place "foodie heaven." Tons of fresh produce, meats, pastas, breads, cheeses, and so one. Plus, you have to love a place serving Pimm's Cups and Prosecco Spritzers in to-go cups at 11 a.m.

St. John Bread & Wine

With an ever-changing seasonal menu of fresh goodness, this airy little spot reminded us a lot of San Francisco. We had razor clams, olives, bread, salad, plus English peas with cress and cheese. (Photos borrowed from the interwebs, because I was too busy eating.)

Bassoon Bar

Just around the corner from our hotel is a much swankier hotel, where Chris and I had the priciest cocktails of our lives (damn you, exchange rate!). They were fantastic. But we won't be regulars unless we hit the lotto while we're here.

I had the Ghost — Hendricks’s gin, fresh lemon and lychee juice, Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur and The Bitter Truth Creme de Violette Liqueur served with a chunk of clear ice, lavender and marinated cherry.

Chris had somehting called the Tory Prescription. I can't find a description, but it was tasty.

Meat Liquor

Too dark for food/drink pics, but this punk rock burger bar was fantastic. Good cocktails. Great burger. And they even make a mean Greek salad. And it's called Meat Liquor. Done.

This is the ceiling:

Ceviche

Peruvian food with the one and only Annie Dean, who just happened to be here for work too. Yay for serendipity, ceviche and Pisco sours. (Also borrowed these photos. Too much talking to take pictures.)
